Sexual Harassment Essay

To begin with, it may be logical to provide a comprehensive definition of sexual harassment. According to Howard and Walsh, the latter is any kind of coercion that is sexual in nature and/or unwanted promise of different rewards in exchange for sexual actions (58). One can clearly see, there are two major elements that should be discussed. The first is coercion of sexual nature. The latter can take any form ranging from direct assault or rape to inappropriate remarks about one’s looks. It is important to keep in mind that many people fail to recognize the fact that sexual harassment may take the form of seemingly harmless actions. The second element of that should be stressed is that this issue sometimes involves promise of something in exchange for sexual actions. In other words, a person might behavior properly and do nothing that can be associated with sexual activity; however, one might make a proposition that would qualify as sexual harassment. In many cases, this is the offense that is most difficult to prove since it is often done when no other person is present. Nevertheless, it still should be punished as it offends the other person.

It may be particularly important to pay attention to the situation that happens in the workplace that is identified as sexual harassment. Sometimes it happens so that a group of workers (regardless of their gender) tends to intimidate their co-workers in a number of ways that would involve sexual nature. In any case, this would include inappropriate remarks about one’s looks or gestures and actions that offend the other person. One of the biggest problems, in this case, is that the superior employees might also be a part of this bullying group. This leaves the victim helpless. This might result in terrible consequences. Another common scenario of sexual harassment involves the promise of promotion in exchange for sexual intercourse (Boland 145). It is important to point out that this might involve people of different genders, but in the majority of the cases, a superior male employee would make this promise to an inferior female employee. There is no doubt that this goes against work ethics and diminishes the abilities of the person who was made such an offer. Similarly to the situation with bullying described above, it is rather difficult for a person to file a grievance because of the superior status of the person who is harassing.

Nevertheless, one should keep in mind that work is not the only context where sexual harassment can occur. There are numerous examples in the daily life. One of the widely spread ones is referred to as “catcalling”. This is a form of sexual harassment that involves people making inappropriate remarks about looks of a person in public. In many cases, this involves a group of men making remarks about a woman. The problem is that the public might tolerate this kind of behavior, suggesting that this is a manifestation of men’s excessive sexuality and as a reward for a woman’s beauty. Furthermore, it may be rather difficult to differentiate between a man making romantic advances towards a woman in the very beginning and sexual harassment. On the one hand, some men tend to flirt in ways that many women would find offensive; on the other hand, the men would never consider those actions a kind of sexual harassment since they assume that the partners may give one’s consent to future relations. Therefore, it always depends on a person and the context. Nevertheless, one can be said for sure: sexual harassment must never be tolerated in any situation.
