“Slang: Language That’s Out of Date” Article Review

Slang was always a subject to the detailed study from the part of researchers and Terry E. Johnson has proved to be quite successful in this field. In his article Slang: Language That’s Out Of Date, T.E. Johnson presents his findings and reveals the current development of slang and changes that occur to the modern language. The language tends to changes and so does slang. Johnson reveals the fact that in the course of time slang has started to evolve. In the past, slang was mainstream among the youth and certain cultural groups. The popularity of slang was determined by the difference of slang from the Standard English. Hence, slang became the means of self-expression of the youth and other social groups.

However, Johnson has found out that in the course of time the role of slang has changed. Instead of the major means of self expression for the youth, slang rather became the language of marginalized groups than the popular language used by the youth. Johnson insists that slang grows out of date. In fact, slang is not as popular as it used to be and its role in society as the means of self expression and communication decreases. At the same time, he points out that the emergence of internet, telecommunication systems, and digital technologies contributed to the development of new language forms. For example, text messaging became more popular and elements of this language have been introduced into the regular language and communication between people.

In such a way, Johnson concludes that slang grows out of date. People tend to shift toward new language forms, whereas slang becomes the language used by marginalized groups. The progress of society and technology has contributed to consistent changes in the use of slang.
