The Problem Of Abortion in America Essay

The problem of abortion, one of the central problems of modern bioethics, has always existed, at all times, in all cultures. The last century, in addition to the world wars, space exploration, and other key events in human history, was also marked by the revision of the abortion issue. Abortion for centuries is regarded as a sin, infanticide and a flagrant violation of medical ethics. Thus, the main aim of the assignment is to explore the problem of abortion in America from different perspectives, and to observe the position of the necessity to allow or prohibit abortion in private hospitals in America.

Firstly, it is important to mention that abortion as a method of getting rid of unwanted pregnancies was known even in antiquity. But this practice could not be extended widely, as abortion is almost always represent a serious danger to the mother and child, and can be fatal for the mother. Thinking about the deep roots of the problem, it is good to note that women have abortions because they were unable to prevent unwanted impregnation. There is a term – “family planning”, which refers to the ability of couples to have as many children as they want and when they want. The main tool of the planning is contraception. Thus, according to Dombrink & Hillyard (2007), a large number of abortions in America suggests that family planning is carried out ineffectively, in other words – people are not too well thought about their future. In such a way, it is important to observe the problem of abortion, helping women to be more educated in the issue, in spite of taking of women a possibility to make an abortion in private hospitals in America.

There exist two quite opposite opinions on the issue of abortions in contemporary society. The supporters of abortions say that taking into account existing medical technologies, abortion is one of the safest operations. Cook et al (2014) stated that there is no necessity to treat this operation as something different than any other operation. It is a truth that abortion can negatively influence on women’s health but to have an unwanted child is not a decision too. There exist an opinion that only women has a right to solve the destiny of her future child, and it is necessary to give women as much possibilities to take care of their health, even making abortions, as possible.

The opponents of abortions, in their turn, mention that the problem of abortion in America acquires the character of a national threat in terms of the demographic crisis. This is conditioned by the prevalence of abortion, tolerance of society to the problem. Jefferis (2011) said that analysis of the moral justification for abortion on each of the stages of development of society reveals the variety of cultural, social and ideological views of modern world. On the one hand, prohibition of abortion in private hospitals allows to cut the ground from under the feet of the so-called shadow abortive business. On the other hand, women will take care of their contraception better because it is better to think twice than to make an abortion.

In summary, the issue of abortion is a topic of hot debates in contemporary society, and people are divided in two quite opposite camps regarding the necessity to allow or to prohibit abortions in private hospitals in America. Both sides of the debate are sure that their arguments are strong enough to win the battle, but the problem still exists. Finally, despite the diametrically opposed positions on the issue of abortion, both supporters and opponents of legalization and moral justification for this operation, recognize the fact that killing is ethically unacceptable. Thus, it is also very important to note that there exists a set of specific steps that may reconcile the two struggling camps because the ways to reduce the number of abortions are well known nowadays. It is the availability of reliable information on family planning methods, and specialist advice on their selection, availability and accessibility of a variety of modern contraceptives and, of course, sex education for young people.
