The Issue Of Violence In Middle Schools

While there is a heated debate whether people are inherently violent or not, one can be said for sure: there is a clear correlation between anger or violence and language. In other words, it may be useful to see how words can trigger violence and whether discourse is able to shape the culture that would make aggression acceptable. Furthermore, it may be important to design ways to predict aggressive behavior from the words, thus making sure that violent actions are avoided. This paper will approach this issue, based on a video clip about violence in middle schools.

To begin with, it is essential to determine the type of language that can be attributed to aggression. It would not be an exaggeration to suggest that various forms of name-calling, direct insults or talking behind one’s back are an act of verbal aggression. It is quite obvious that when a person is engaged in this kind of verbal behavior, one is trying to hurt the interlocutor which means that this should be seen as a manifestation of aggression. Furthermore, one should also keep in mind that the victim, in this case, is likely to talk back which will contributes to aggression as well.

It is worth pointing out that it may be possible to predict aggressive behavior from mere words. To put it differently, the manner in which a person talks can reveal whether one is planning to be aggressive. For example, if a person replies quickly to any kind of insult that one faces, then it is highly like that this person will be aggressive since this kind of verbal behavior is merely a prelude to actual aggression. Therefore, it is essential to understand the verbal behavior of the people since it is able to tell a lot about their intentions and the way in which they plan to interact with others.

Another important aspect to mention with this regard is the role of the society in determining the definition of anger and violence. Thus, the majority of people would consider acts of physical violence to be the only kind of violence there is. In other words, the actions which were mentioned above such as name calling, badgering or insulting are not seen as violence per se. This, obviously, creates a certain gray zone where people are allowed to operate without being seen as violent or aggressive in the strict meaning of the word.

Finally, the understanding of “bullying” can shape the sense of violence to a great extent. For example, if bullying is performed on the pretext that a person does not fit a particular social class which is manifested in the wrong kind of clothes that one wears or some other activities, then this kind of bullying is acceptable in a way that it is justified in the eyes of the bullies as restoration of justice since they show an outsider one’s place. However, and this it quite obvious, that this is still perceived as an act of aggression in the eyes of the victim.

Therefore, having examined all the points that were mentioned in the paragraphs above, one is able to come to the following conclusion: anger or violence are correlated with the kind of language devices that a person uses. So, there is verbal behavior that should be seen as violent or aggressive such as name calling, badgering or insulting. Moreover, it is possible to predict aggressive behavior from mere words in the majority of the cases. Surprisingly, the society plays an important role in determining the definition of violence. Furthermore, the perception of bullying shapes the attitude to violence in general.
