How Has Social Media Impacted American Culture?

Nowadays social media took a position that is stronger than the position of reality itself. Many years ago, cinema was perceived in this way, when true reality was changed by the reality taken from different films. Creating a virtual reality comes in propaganda, operations of influence and information war from the experience of mass culture. This transition is understandable, since mass culture has achieved serious results in the mass and depth of coverage of the population of any country, by the way, becoming the most powerful tool of globalization. Thus, social media today has become the main happiness for the population and has greatly affected American culture, because with the development of social media, a person gradually loses the need for personal contacts. Therefore, all this leads to the fact that not the truth begins to rule in the world in most cases, but fakes from social media.

Speaking of the causes of great changes in American culture on the basis of social media, they are simple and understandable. The virtual world built by social media becomes real for consumers of information. The main thing is that it meets consumer expectations, and its reality (or unreality) is of a secondary nature (Goldman, 2013). As many years ago, an American man was captivated by the life of TV millionaires from a television series, so today a new world of Facebook “friends” has opened up its opportunities before the person, while these “friends” parade the very best sides of their lives. On the one hand, different social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, and many other similar communication services help people to communicate daily in easy way (Phoon, 2017). It means that friends, family members, classmates or business partners are independent in their communication without paying attention to distance. On the other hand, social networks made people more focused on virtual communication than on maintaining personal contacts.

At the same time, the negative effects of the media can be found in the fact that today social media took a position that is stronger than the position of reality itself. This can be explained by the phenomenon of “stars”, which originated with the advent of cinema (Jenkins et al, 2013). This means that the whole world is getting passed through the film filter industry. Americans remember a well-known feeling of the cinema-goer who perceives the street on which the cinema stands, as a continuation of the just-ended spectacle, precisely because the latter is always focused on the exact reproduction of everyday perception of the world, becomes the guiding thread of the production process. The more dense and continuous is the duplication of empirical objectivity carried out by his technicians, the easier it is to establish the illusion that the external world is only a direct continuation of the one with which acquaintance in a movie theater is reduced. Since the moment of the emergence of sound cinema with lightning speed, the mechanical augmentation of reality wholly and completely begins to serve this idea. In accordance with this tendency, real life was not allowed to differ in any way from a sound film. In such a way, the same situation has affected American culture because people always try to compare their lives with some social media representatives, and forget to live own personal life in accordance with their inner principles.

A huge number of changes in American culture are conditioned by the fact that people are not yet aware of how much the logic of computer programs has penetrated into any of human media or cultural messages. Symbolic forms today are becoming the interface for computer programs. Within these areas of thought related to technological determinism, which is not shared by all researchers, Digital Humanities and Public History are developing. Understanding that not a political situation, not a social situation, but the logic of a computer program affects the content of knowledge, is one of the key issues in this area today.

Many modern life problems arise from the fact that a person has a multiple identity. An individual, of course, belongs to the place, but he simultaneously belongs to much more things. The harmonious combination of the one and the other is a question of modern media in a broad sense, if people do not reduce media only to one source of information, but talk about communication platforms and communication technologies (Buzzetto-More et al, 2015). In such a way, social media in the narrow sense of the word is incredibly important. Information flow permeates space, is the ether, as the force of gravity. Just as it is impossible to imagine the modern world without gravity, which Newton studied, it is impossible to imagine the modern world without the power lines that penetrate it, which create information flows.

Modern social media includes many aspects of human social life and social action. This includes city navigation, computer games, and even interpersonal interactions become indirectly mediated by media. All these processes have a digital format. It is not only that digital technologies allow American people to reproduce their communications, cultural artifacts, works of art, books, etc., but also change human consciousness and ways of working. The twentieth century has given people new technologies for managing society, business, corporations and, unfortunately, consciousness. This combination of modern management technologies and media technologies has created a completely new reality virtual. This is a reality where everything is possible.

In conclusion, although social media gave a person a vast ground for development, there was a certain technical blow to civilization. Business interests of the creators of technical platforms have changed the usual rules of human behavior. It turned out that a person easily surrenders to submission to the rules that are invisible to him. Moreover, this kind of thing has no government control. Thus, the virtual reality is always stronger than the real one, because social media allows selecting those instruments, which will have the greatest impact on the changes in human consciousness.
