Social Work Issue Free Essay

The Difficulties of Social Work and Their Solution

I am someone who loves helping people, hence my interest is in social work. Over the years, I have been involved in situations that required applying social work skills. There was a boy, Bryan, 17 years of age, who was brought into the clinic (where I worked) because of an overdose of cocaine. He was a substance abuser; he had puncture marks all over his arm and forearm which got me thinking that at 17 years old, when could he have started taking drugs? Where were his parents? Luckily for him, the doctors were able to revive and stabilize him, and I got the chance to talk with him.

Bryan told me all about his issues. He is the second child out of four in his family. He has an elder brother and two younger sisters. His parents are poor; they could not provide for him and his brother and sisters. His elder brother is in jail for drug possession; his father is not around, all the effort of taking care of the family is all on his mother. His mother works two jobs and does not have time for him and his siblings, although, they are enrolled in school. He started using cocaine at the age of 14, but he had been introduced to drugs earlier than that. He found some on his brother’s at some time, and when his brother went to jail, he started selling drugs on the streets. It was during his tie selling drugs that he started using and became an addict. Bryan was a smart kid, the way he spoke, the way he comported himself when I asked him about the drugs and the family was really good. He also asked for help because he believes that if he continued using one more visit to the hospital might be his last permanently.

I introduced him to the counseling unit of the clinic, where I happened to be the counselor. I helped create a schedule that would be convenient for him to attend meetings, I followed up with him and his family and tried to be supportive of his mother. Bryan was so cooperative, and he did everything that was required of him to get healthy. I was so excited to have been at the clinic when he was brought in, and I got to be a source of help to him. At 17, I expected some teenage resistance, but that was not the case. Bryan’s case was the easiest I have encountered in my job. There were much more difficult cases than these.
