  2. Describing its context, it is possible to say that the televised speech of President Jimmy Carter delivered on July 15, 1979, became the model of how the leader in times of crisis should speak to the nation. At this time, the United States was in a situation of deep energy crisis, which was caused by their foreign policy in the Middle East. The president spoke primarily about simple things. Carter began by reminding the audience about his fundamental promises when he was elected as President of the United States. He admitted about the crisis in the loss of unity for the nation. Then he acknowledged that addressing the national problems, he spoke more about the problems that were meaningful only within the state or the city, but not for the whole nation. To remedy the situation, the President has contacted with the representatives of different sectors of the population and citizens for ten days. Gathering all the necessary information and advices he heard these days, he pointed to the nation’s main problem – a crisis of confidence. The signs of the crisis were on the face: a lack of faith in one’s own future, the future of the country, the ever-increasing gap between ordinary citizens and the Congress. He noted that human personality ceased to be determined by what it does. As a result, Carter’s appeal to the nation became popular with Americans, and thus his rating has rapidly increased, but further actions of the President of the United States did not allow him to be elected to a second term.
