Strategies To Reach An Academic Success Research Paper

My personal academic success is the result of my hard efforts to focus on learning and the favorable learning environment which motivates me to keep on learning and helps me to achieve better career opportunities, which are my priorities at the moment. At the same time, my academic development is driven not only by my ambitions and career perspectives but also by my desire to keep progressing at the personal level. Education is not just the way to my career success but also it is my way to the successful personal development. However, what helps me to be successful in learning is my learning style, which I have elaborated in the course of time due to the extensive experience of learning. Therefore, my personal academic success involves my successful professional and personal development that is based on hard learning and successful implementation of the most efficient learning style, which I have elaborated in the course of my learning.

Learning styles

Learning styles differ consistently. Some students better perceive visual information and they need the use of visual effects in the course of the learning (Carlson, 2010). Therefore, such students focus on visual means to perceive instructions and develop their learning with the help of visual means because they facilitate their learning. For example, they need reading instructions to understand them better, even though they heard them from the educator.

Other students rely heavily on listening that requires educators to elaborate the method of the instruction delivery that matches needs of those students. These students need to listen to instructions and perceive better the information, when they hear it. In case of such students, simple reading will be of little help for them, in contrast to students with better developed visual learning style. Instead, such students need to hear instructions from the educator or watch video instructions, for example, and, thus, they can better understand them.

As for me, I prefer auditory and verbal learning style, which involves the combination of auditory and verbal style. In fact, this learning style effective for me because I am always interested in communication with people and communication helps me to learn successfully. However, the effective communication is impossible without the use of effective listening or auditory skills and without well developed verbal skills. Having both auditory and verbal skills I can maintain effective communication with other students, educators and others that facilitates my learning and makes the learning process even pleasant.

Moreover, I am more interpersonal and interaction with other students as well a educators in the learning process are very important for me. I attempt to develop positive interpersonal relations to enhance my academic performance. I learn by observation and practice mainly that means that I can learn from educators or my peers and apply the knowledge, I have acquired from them to practice, in real world situations or in the course of my learning.

Time management

In the course of my education, I have learned that time management is crucial for the successful learning. In this regard, students can use different strategies of time management, which though may not always be effective and depend on the particular student and specific environment, where the student studies. For example, some students tend to develop a very rigid schedule which they do not dare to change because they believe that any slightest change in their schedule would ruin their academic plan and deteriorate their academic performance. In fact, this strategy is effective as long as students are really good in planning and can foresee all the issues that may arise in the course of their learning.

As for me, I prefer more flexible schedule, which allows me to schedule my learning and my activities focusing on key issues and admitting possibilities of slight changes that may affect secondary aspects of my schedule or plan. For example, during a day, I plan to attend classes, to work in a library for two hours, to talk to my educator, and so on. However, if something goes wrong and I cannot fully match my schedule I make some changes but I do not change core points of my schedule. For example, I do attend my class but I may cut the time I spend in the library to one hour only. In such a way, I develop my schedule for a day, week, month and semester.

Alternatively, the time management may be based on the proximate development only focusing on a week schedule only, while the further schedule is developed on the ground of their current achievements (Shettleworth, 2010). In fact, I believe such time management is good for beginners. For example, often beginners have great plans and introduce many items in their schedule but soon they find out that they cannot perform even a half of it. As a result, they have to reschedule their plan or change their schedule for the next week to make it more realistic.

At the same time, I prefer to study at night because it is the most convenient way to study for me. At the moment, I have to share my education with my job. In actuality, I am doing the fully-time job that takes a lot of time and efforts but I also attempt to keep learning because education is still pivotal for me, my personal and professional development. I have accustomed to study at night, when I have some time to focus on my learning aside of my full-time job. At the same time, for I am working as a nurse, I have the excellent opportunity to apply my knowledge and skills acquired in the course of my learning to practice in real world situations.

Stress management

Stress management is pivotal for the academic success because students study in a highly stressful environment. Therefore, they have to manage stress effectively to minimize its negative effects. If they fail t manage stress effectively, they face a risk of the steep deterioration of their performance and they cannot reach their academic success.

One of the strategies of the stress management involves simple avoidance of stress. However, in my opinion, this strategy is ineffective. In its essence, stress avoidance implies the balanced attitude to learning, when students try to avoid stress by scheduling their day properly to avoid overwork or excessive learning, scheduling their free time, having a rest, and so on. However, stress avoidance rather leads to the avoidance of learning overall because students can hardly avoid stresses, if they learn hard. If they do not learn hard, they cannot be really successful in their academic performance.

Other students use autogenic training to prevent stress and minimize its negative impact on their academic performance. The autogenic training implies that students attempt to persuade themselves that they feel good and they have no problems at all. In fact, such strategy is very difficult to apply because the application of this strategy is possible only, when students can fully control their emotions. In the stressful environment, it is extremely difficult to control one’s emotions. At least, I have difficulties with controlling my emotions, when I am in a highly stressful environment. This is why this stress management strategy may be effective in relation to students, who have the high level of self-control and can stay cool in the most challenging and stressful situations.

As for me, I prefer talking therapy as an effective stress management strategy. This strategy is simple and effective at the same time. What I really need is to talk to my friends or a person, who is important for me (Baum, 2012). As I share my problems or listen to problems that my friend has, I become more relaxed and feel at ease because I become aware of the fact that all my problems are temporary and I have the ability and power to resolve them successfully. What I have to do is to choose the right way of action and tackle my problems successfully.

Goal setting

The academic success is impossible without clear goal setting but, in this regard, SMART goals are particularly important because they are succinct and concrete. They help students to determine clearly what they really want to achieve. This is why they can work hard and achieve those very specific and concrete goals.

My goal is to obtain my major that is my priority in a short-term perspective. This goal is SMART. First, this goal is very specific since I focus on my major and going to obtain it. This goal is measureable since after the end of my education, I will have a diploma on my hands that proves that I have obtained my major (Schunk, 2011). This goal is attainable because I have been quite successful in learning so far. The goal is realistic because obtaining a major is possible, if I work hard. Finally, this goal is timely because my education is limited and has very specific timeline, until I receive my major.

In a long run, I focus on the successful career accompanied by regular training to keep me progressing. This goal is more complicated but still smart. This goal is specific because I focus on my career development in my specific field. Second, this goal is measurable because the employment and every promotion I gain are measures of my career progress. The goal is achievable because, if I work, they I can achieve certain progress in my career development. Furthermore, the goal is realistic because I do plan to work and, as long as I work, I do some career progress. Finally, the goal is timely because as any other person I am going to get employed after my graduation and I am going to retire, when I achieve 65, for example.

Strategies for academic success

One of the strategies that contribute to my academic success is the focus on the high motivation for learning. In this regard, I use multiple motivators from my future career prospects to some short-run benefits, such as a purchase of an item I want to possess after the successful completion of a course, for example. The high motivation facilitates my learning.

Another effective strategy that can increase the effectiveness of learning and help to reach a better academic success is the focus on my proximate development that means that I set tasks, which are difficult for me to achieve but which I can achieve. Such strategy keeps me motivated because I know it is hard but possible to achieve.

Furthermore, I also use the strategy of the development of positive interpersonal relations in my learning environment. As a result, I integrate into the local community and develop positive relations with my peers, educators and other people that help me to feel better and study at ease.


Thus, my academic success is grounded on the effective learning style, which I have elaborated in the course of my education. At the same time, the learning style depends on multiple factors, such as the stress management, time management, learning environment and other issues. Nevertheless, I feel being confident in my academic achievements and further progress.
