Plan Of Strengthening Curricular Programs

As I perform the duties of a principal and have three years of experience in this school, I can evaluate the efforts of improving instruction and draw conclusions.  Due to my regular classroom visits with the purpose to make observations and provide support to the development of the planning process, I have measured student achievement and made a decision to support some staff through reinforcement of their practices. The problem I face in the school setting requires applying an individual approach. The parent who expressed some concerns about the movie that was being shown in her son’s classroom should receive a consultation. There is a need for explaining the parent that the curriculum materials cannot be excluded from the school curriculum for a number of reasons. First of all, the course curriculum is evaluated by the Curriculum and Assessment Committee. Secondly, it is supported by the school staff as the most appropriate material for the selected topic. The parent should allow her son to participate in the classroom activities. In this situation, my next steps would be based on legal requirements. If the news and my Superintendent would be the next to meet with the parent, there is a need for addressing the problem by means of joint actions aimed at strengthening curriculum program. According to researchers, curriculum is “derived from a set of material resources or it can be implicit in a project or set of activities planned by a skilled specialist” (Halpem, 2003, p. 142). Strengthening curriculum programs requires reviewing the program’s philosophy and the key goals to make changes in particular activities (Anfara & Stacki, 2002). I will strengthen curriculum as well as corresponding instructional programs. I will investigate the relevant curriculum documents and strengthen the assessment of the content areas. Finally, I will collaborate with the staff to make improvements in the instructional units and deal with the weaknesses in curriculum. For example, it would be better to replace the film A Cry in the Wild with a new one, which would be more correct to be used as an effective curriculum resource for the 5th grade students.
