Sustainability in the Context of Water

The sustainable development becomes the priority for the world development so far because irrevocable environmental changes driven by the negative impact of human activities lead to the consistent deterioration of the quality of life and put under a threat the survival of many people as well as many species. In this regard, water is particularly important because it is the essential source of life and human existence is impossible without it. Therefore, the sustainable development in the context of water is essential to preserve water resources and maintain the stable water supply that helps to maintain at least current standards of living and public health.

The problem of unsustainable development and degradation of water resources have become obvious recently, when the steep decline of water resources accompanied the global climate change. To put it more precisely, the global climate change contributed to the reduction of water resources and waste of a large part of wetlands. In this regard, the unsustainable development in the field of agriculture, urban development, industry and energy, domestic water consumption, and the climate change became the major threats to the preservation of water resources and their effective use. Agricultural water consumption comprises about 70% of the total water consumption in the world (Water and Sustainable Development, 2016). Energy and industry do not simply consume water but create substantial risks to the water pollution that is particularly dangerous because many industrial productions in the world are located close to cities and sources of potable water. The urban water consumption growth along with the water pollution because waste water has to be processed effectively but this is not always the case. Finally, the domestic consumption of water raises the problem of irrational and excessive use of water along with the water pollution that makes water use ineffective.

In response to such challenges, the sustainable development strategy is essential to implement to maximize the effectiveness of the water consumption. The sustainable agricultural development involves the effective water used based on the use of new methods of farming and optimization of the water consumption, along with the effective processing of waste water (The Importance of Water Sustainability, 2016). The use of chemicals should be safe for environment or totally replace to prevent their negative impact on soil and ground water.  The industrial and energy production also needs sustainable development to make the water consumption more efficient. In this respect, the processing of waste water and the minimization of the water consumption should be priorities for the sustainable development. The urban water consumption also needs sustainability in terms of the more efficient waste water processing and optimization of the water consumption. The latter is particularly important for the domestic water consumption because the efficient use of water can help to save potable water and decrease the consumption consistently. For example, the use of new equipment that reduces the water use may help to reduce the water consumption. However, the sustainable development still faces the problem of the climate change, which cannot be stopped by changes in the water consumption or waste water processing alone. Instead, it needs complex measures that change human activities and make them sustainable.

The measurement of the sustainability is challenging but it is possible to use the evaluation of such data as the water consumption and water quality as the main indicators of the sustainability. The low water consumption and high quality of potable water and the high quality of processed waste water are indicators of the effective sustainable development of the water consumption.

Finally, the sustainability starts from personal habits of each individual. For example, I can contribute to sustainability by developing efficient water consumption habits. I can use potable water for drinking only. I can decrease the water consumption by installing new equipment that reduces the water consumption.
