“T is for True” by Klosterman Book Review

The following quote from the chapter “T is for True” provides a good food for thought and analysis. Klosterman writes, “This is why we become so disoriented whenever someone tells the truth in a forthright manner; it always seems ridiculous, precisely because it is not.” Analyzing these lines, it becomes obvious that we are all conditioned to speak the language of irony or the language of fabrication, or at least partial fabrication that, when someone is telling us something that is absolutely sincerely true, we find it hard to understand – it’s that uncommon. People like false ideas and ironic manner of speaking and often tell something untrue with unreal sincerity. So how do we know he/she is not lying? In reality, humanity really lives in nebulous world where the real essence of the great number of things have been lost and forgotten. People continue to forget the real sense of relationships, face-to-face communication, high moral values, and appreciations about faith, religion, and God. There are a lot of artificial things around us that lead to false beliefs, wrongful choices, inappropriate behaviors, and attitudes to other people. We often forget that people’s lives should be based on honest concepts and truth. But in today’s full of pressure world, we often tell lie to each other, even when we do not want to. Many people think that telling sincere truth, showing honest feelings, and opening your real inner identity can reflect the individual’s weakness and inability to cope with daily challenges and life difficulties. Despite this, there are many individuals who want to be heard and strive to tell sincere truth in a forthright manner; it is always seems ridiculous because for most of us lying is much more interesting. People feel better about themselves when they are telling lie or follow false concepts. In such a way they want to hide personal weakness; they lack of high moral principles and faith in personal potential. So it can be hard to understand those who really tell sincere truth. Why? Because people almost always speak with the language of irony that prevents us from hearing real truth, notice the individual’s honesty and openness. We use a lot of humour and comedic features in modern communication with other people, which makes it difficult to understand the individual’s sincere truth. It’s becomes so central in modern society that everything begins with irony or described as ironic. According to Klosterman, “almost every new cultural invention is built on (a) an overt suggestion of partial dishonesty or (b) the universal inference that the artist must be lying, even when he or she insists otherwise”. I consider much of things including telling the truth significantly depends on the individual’s identity and inner self. We can easily determine if the person tells lie or truth. It is essential to consider his or her manner of speaking, tone, body language, facial expressions, her life philosophy, moral principles, attitudes to religion, and relationships with people.

Truth… Is there such a thing as this nebulous word? How do we know a person is not lying? That is an interesting, even mysterious question full of space for personal assumptions and beliefs. I consider it is difficult to determine exactly and you never know. But humanity should understand the importance of truth as it may secure our souls, spiritual maturity, and our world. Truth is not a mystery; it is a real thing that exists in our real world. Though our inner perception, deep feelings, and approaches we can easily determine whether a person tells sincere truth and tries to send a message of justice, honesty, and faith or if he just lies pretending and hiding the real essence of things.
