Summary and defense of the paper

Bathmavathy Dalayga, Mozhdeh Mohkber & Siti Zaleha Abdul Rashid, in the article named  “Talent Shortage: Talent Development as a Tool to Thwart it Globally,”  investigate the problem of talent shortage and try to find an adequate solution to the problem. The article was published in the International Journal of Academic Research in Business and Social Sciences in 2017.  The study, performed by the authors, investigates the problem of talent shortage from different perspectives. From the one side, the authors make an attempt to understand possible reasons of such phenomenon. As they point out, “According to, ManpowerGroup 2016-Talent Shortage Survey 2016, talent shortages in 2016 for global firms, peaks at 40% which has increased 2% since 2015 and employers finding it difficult to fill the vacancies and retain the employees. Global talent shortage remains as a big hurdle in MNCs” (Dalayga et al., 2017, p. 991). From the other hand, they turn existing sources, researches and investigations ,which give the chance to understand factors, which influence talent development and this way give employees and HR managers the chance to develop special skills among their employees.

The authors of the article make an attempt to find out the possible reasons of the talent shortages. They note that for the present moment global processes, which take place in the contemporary world, make a lot of global companies rethink their policies towards HR management.  Globalization gives new opportunities and new creates challenges. Now talented employees feel more freedom and thus can chose company, and even country to work in. In addition, the authors of the article believe that the demographic change has impact on talent shortage.

The authors of the article point out that Global Talent Management (GTM) is a new trend, which will gain major importance on the nearest future. The companies    facing new challenges have to develop new strategies to attract talents to their companies.  As Dalayga et al. (2017)   point out, “Due to pressing global talent shortages, GTM is becoming an important strategic area for the survival and success of MNC and become a primary concern for managers globally, as many companies determine that their current manpower capabilities are insufficient to cover expected future demands (p. 993).  The  article presents GTM phases, which can be an effective policy, meeting the problem of talent shortage. The authors describe such phases as: recruitment and staffing, talent development, and talent retention. Effective HR management of different phases assumes different tasks and strategies. Understanding peculiarities of each phase is crucially important for the effective HR policing.

Results and Conclusions

The article gave me basic idea about the problem of talent shortage. The article and additional research helped me understand that talent shortage is a global problem, which affects  all spheres of the contemporary business.  Companies and corporations come to realization about the importance of the effective HR strategies.  Facing the modern reality, Global Talent Management should become one of the most important strategic approaches of the contemporary HR management. Study about the GTM phases gives better understanding about possible solutions to the problem, which should be developed in accordance with the phases.
