Task of Cultural Translation | Discussion

Why is the “task of cultural translation” (49) something more and different than an assimilation to an existing norm” (50)?

Both cultural translation and assimilation refer to examination of cultural contexts, but their tasks are different. Assimilation leads to adaptation to some uniqueness of foreign cultures, while cultural translation leads to cultural assimilation at the global level. The major task of cultural translation is to move toward foreignization, when the process of assimilation of foreign cultures becomes more complicated and requires comprehensive cultural interpretation. The extension of universality in culture is presented in the form of translation another culture, or to another cultural context. Cultural translation requires openness and accessibility in relation to foreign culture, because this process is culturally dependent. At the same time, it is necessary to consider that cultural translation may lead to the failure of existing norms. According to Butler, “the kind of translation that exposes the alterity within the norm exposes the failure of the norm to effect the universal reach for which it stands”(50). Cultural translation is a complicated process that requires using the proper strategies to achieve success in providing cultural appropriation. The task of cultural translation is to give a clear explanation of the foreign ideas and thoughts, placing emphasis on the existing cultural beliefs and values. There should be a close link between the language and the cultural context in the process of cultural translation. Undoubtedly, assimilation to existing norms is important for any translator. The process of cultural translation should be organized in the proper way, addressing the role of universality and the significance of interpretation of the reader. Hence, the task of cultural translation can be viewed as something more and different than assimilation to existing norms of foreign cultures. This task is based on deep understanding of foreign culture, its ideology, norms and values, as well as its universality, in order to properly render the existing cultural interaction.
