Team Work & Team Thinking In Nursing Essay

Team work and team thinking are important components of nursing profession. It is possible to identify eight thinking roles in team thinking: the definer, the analyst, the interpreter, the critic, the synthesizer, the disparity monitor, the task monitor and the emotional monitor (Rubenfeld & Scheffer, 2014). Each of these roles is important for the team, and each of these roles is complemented by the other roles.

It is possible to identify several examples of team thinking and team roles in nursing practice. In the first considered case, a nurse was part of a team including also a physician, a clinical associate and a clerical associate. The goal of the team was to ensure the continuity of patient care and to select the optimal mode of treatment for the patient. In this case, the nurse acted as the definer because she had more interaction with the patient and was able to express primary concerns, requirements and frame the reality of the team. This leading role was perceived positively by most team members although the physician did have a couple of objections which were later resolved in a group discussion and problem-solving activity. The role of the definer is essential for the team thinking process because the definer takes the leadership and frames the processes of team thinking.

In the other case, patient needs and conditions were discussed by a team which consisted of registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and other healthcare professionals. One of the nurses played the role of a critic – she asked difficult questions, identified weaknesses of chosen solutions and potential obstacles. Although this role was perceived in a slightly negative context, the value of such objections was evident when several weak points were found. The presence of a critic is necessary for a healthcare team because the critic reassesses the situation and the solutions (Finkelman & Kenner, 2010), reinterprets the questions discussed by the team and helps to eliminate weaknesses and challenges at the stage of decision-making.
