Virtual Teamwork Essay

One of the main features of modern society is the rapid development of computer information technologies and telecommunications systems. In recent years, there has been a qualitative leap in this field. Thus, the formation of the information society assumes the widespread use of global computer networks. This affects not only the nature of the work of modern specialists, but also the development of their professionalism, increases the possibility of virtual communications in professional communities and intensifies their intensity. Thus, virtual teams allow companies to hire the most talented professionals, while not bringing them inconvenience and not changing their place of residence. As a result, it is important to explore the impacts of virtual interactions and multicultural membership.

To begin, it is good to note that competent use of virtual teams brings significant benefits to the company, and makes it competitive. Virtual teams bring tangible benefits to the business. Firstly, it is saving costs for real estate, office space, utilities, office equipment, etc. Secondly, the lack of a geographical framework provides an opportunity for a company to choose any specialist from anywhere in the world, to bring together experts and specialists from around the world to work on the project.

Observing the impacts of virtual interactions, it can be said that virtual teams show higher labor productivity, because, as a rule, virtual teams have a flatter organizational structure in comparison with the traditional team and clearly defined goals of each participant, which allow to avoid slow decision-making. The fast speed of achieving the result is provided by almost round the clock work on the “product” or project, as its members are often in different time zones.

Researching specific features of multicultural membership in virtual teams, it was found that the difficult tasks facing modern business often require attracting people with dissimilar views and different biographies for plunging into the issues better, generating new discoveries and inventions. Naturally, the heterogeneity in the team also creates problems. According to Lipnack (2000), the research has shown that team members work together more easily and naturally, if they perceive those who work side by side similar to them. Differences that complicate interaction are not only nationality, but also age, level of education, etc. To explain, strong heterogeneity often means that the team is staffed by people who know each other only superficially, or never met before the start of the project (perhaps they are colleagues from different divisions of the company or unknown experts).

In such a way, for the purpose to make the effectiveness of virtual teams with a complex structure maximum, it is important to create a basis for teamwork in the company. Specific methods based on building relationships and changes in the culture of the company may be helpful in this situation. For example, it is necessary to create a stable sense of the collective in the company, organizing various activities that connect people together and help them to know each other better. It is also useful to use informal mentoring and coaching, so that employees begin to perceive interaction with management and colleagues as a valuable thing. Moreover, when managers, HR specialists and team leaders start apply these methods energetically, virtual teams with a complex and multicultural structure will be included in the work directly on the day of its creation.

To conclude, we have explored the impacts of virtual interactions and multicultural membership, and have proved that the effectiveness of a virtual team is very dependent on the ability of the leader to create it correctly, identify the processes properly and manage the team effectively. If everything is done correctly, the virtual team will provide the company with significant advantages.
