The Actual Problem of Plagiarism Essay

Issue of plagiarism is very relevant in the scientific community today. The matter is not just in academic ethics, but also in the legislation of different countries regarding intellectual property rights, which have become stricter regarding plagiarism. Thus, the main aim of the assignment is to observe the issue of plagiarism with all the necessary details.

Firstly, according to Lathrop & Foss (2005), it is possible to state that plagiarism is intentional appropriation of authorship on someone else’s work of literature, science, art, invention and rationalization invention (fully or partially). Recognizing the plagiarism, it is necessary to remember that attribution of authorship – that’s the most important sign of plagiarism, but plagiarism can be partial and then the author borrows only the idea, images, names, and other aspects. Neville (2007) mentioned that for the purpose to avoid plagiarism, the author should paraphrase the original passage accurately by giving credit for the ideas taking from the passage, using proper quotation style with putting the passage in quotation marks and citing even the page number.

Assessing the passage given as an example for this assignment, it becomes obvious that a student plagiarized in the attempts to avoid plagiarism. For instance, the student’s words “biomedical researchers incorporate strict rules of science into their work, which is examined by peers” are almost similar to the original text that is “biomedical research incorporates rigorous scientific rules and is often critically scrutinized by peers”. To continue, the next example is also a kind of plagiarism: “…ending a study too soon, not publishing negative results, publishing results too early, skimming over or ignoring drawbacks, and \’buffing\’ the results by showing them in the best light,” and there is no doubt that the student’s words are paraphrased words of the author “by ending a study because the results are disappointing; changing rules mid-study; not trying to publish negative results; publicizing preliminary results even with final and less positive results in hand; skimming over or even not acknowledging drawbacks; and, especially, casting the results in the best light or, as scientists say, buffing them”. To explain the way, how plagiarism was detected, it becomes obvious that the writer has only changed a little part of the phrase by changing a few words and the order of the original’s part of sentences. To be more accurate and avoiding plagiarism the student would better state the full sentence of the original text using quotation marks. For instance in the following way: Crossen (1994) mentioned in his work that “ although biomedical research incorporates rigorous scientific rules and is often critically scrutinized by peers, the information can nevertheless be warped—by ending a study because the results are disappointing; changing rules mid-study; not trying to publish negative results; publicizing preliminary results even with final and less positive results in hand; skimming over or even not acknowledging drawbacks; and, especially, casting the results in the best light or, as scientists say, buffing them” (pp. 166-167).

In conclusion, this assignment has observed the issue of plagiarism with many details and examples, and proved that it is always necessary to be accurate in citing and paraphrasing some one’s texts for the purpose to avoid plagiarism. Thus, for the purpose to avoid plagiarism in my own writing I need to use my own words, accurately relay to the used information of the original text as well as allow the reader to know the source of original information.
