A Reflection On The Connection Between The Text & The Society | The Article “Video Games”

For this weekly response, I have selected the following form: a reflection on the relationship between the text and society. The text that will be discussed in this paper is the article “Video Games” by Jeanne Funk Brockmyer taken from the book Children, Adolescents and the Media edited by Victor C. Strasburger, Barbara J. Wilson, Amy B. Jordan. The author states that video games have become a “permanent leisure choice” for millions of people across the globe (Brockmyer 457). Video games attract attention of children, adolescents and even adults. However, this type of leisure activity has negative effects on human life. The author is interested in the study of various issues that refer to the use of video games, including time commitment issues, the impact of violent video games on human psyche and behavior, and other issues. In general, there is much evidence that video games contribute to the growth of significant social issues.

There is a considerable relationship between the text and society. As video games market is rather large, the influence of video games on consumers is really significant. The author is focused on the discussion of the history of video games that reflects the major causes of popularity of this type of leisure activity across people of different age groups. According to the author, “video games are no well-established as one of the most popular choices in the array of leisure activities across childhood and adolescence” (Brockmyer 458). This fact means that video games influence the younger generation, making it more computer addicted. Children and adolescent prefer to play video games, ignoring their duties and responsibilities. Some of them drop out of school, others have poor academic achievement. However, there are many children and adolescent who face serious health problems, including behavior problems, psychological problems and physical problems. As a result, our society is affected by the negative consequences caused by video game addiction. According to the author, video games may influence the state of an individual’s consciousness (Brockmyer 459).  Undoubtedly, these impacts vary because some players have an opportunity to control their feelings and emotions, while others fail to do it in a proper way. Violent video games lead to the growth of social violence, including crime, domestic abuse and poor social interaction. Today the government is interested in developing effective regulatory policies to reduce the depiction of such content of video games as “violence, sexual themes and language” (Brockmyer 460).

Thus, the text “Video Games” by Jeanne Funk Brockmyer has direct relation to society because the author discusses significant issues that influence the development of our society, its functioning and further improvement. Video games as a common leisure choice are associated with increased level of violence. Our society should be healthy and well-organized. Therefore, the violent content of video games should be properly controlled by the government. Moreover, parents should be involved in regulation process as they can reduce the negative impacts of video games addiction of their children. There is much evidence that violent video games are still very popular. The text discussed in this paper helps to better understand the significance of the problem faced by our society. The exposure of children and adolescents to violent video games requires regulation of their behavior, which often leads to reactive aggression. In order to develop a healthy society, it is necessary to teach children and adolescent general social rules and set specific behavior patterns based on the established rules and regulations.
