The Disadvantages of the GMO’s Use Free Example

GMO is one of the hottest topics, and the heated debate never stops flying around it. There are interesting aspects of the production of GMOs, such as the benefits of genetically modified products and why, after all, someone is violently for, and someone is totally against it. Everyone is involved in battles: biologists, genetics, environmental organizations, farmers, suppliers of pesticides and other rubbish and just individual citizens. GMO products are suspected of provoking a number of dire consequences: cancer, allergies, infertility, hereditary mutations. Since genetically modified food products have already become realities today, tomorrow they are unlikely to disappear abruptly from the global market. Therefore, one needs to take in-depth consideration and analysis into the disadvantages of the GMO’s use.


The discovery of GMOs safety is a crucial part of the program of research and technological developments in applied molecular biology. Freedman (2013) says the opponents of the accelerated use of GMOs argue that adverse effects on human health may not manifest immediately and be irreversible. Yet, the main argument of the opponents of GM organisms is that not enough time has passed to make conclusions about their safety, and it is possible that negative consequences will affect future generations. Let’s discuss top five arguments against the use of GMO as follows:

  1. GMO plants do not produce seeds. It implies that farmers must buy more and more seeds every single time for new planting. In this regard, the theory that GMO products will help feed the starving countries seems doubtful since both farmers and consumers are dependent on seed suppliers, who, especially in the case of monopolism, can practically rule the world. Besides, the issue concerns not only plant foods, but also animals that eat something that “needs to grow.”
  2. GMO plants are resistant to pesticides, with which they grow. GMOs guarantee a steady high yield to the farmers and societies, regardless of pests and weather conditions. Though plants can be treated with agrochemicals and pesticides that will kill pests, in the given situation, the plant itself may die. To prevent this outcome, GMO produces are developed into more potent and resistant to withstand the processing of pesticides: pests die, the plan remains, the crop is at its height, farmers earn a lot of money, and GMOs supplies – even more. Everyone is happy, except for consumers: after all, corn or rice have absorbed so much chemistry that people lose appetite immediately.
  3. GMOs cause the most diverse damage to the human body. Scholars are continually exploring the harm of GMO products for people in a variety of manifestations in the forms of allergies, the emergence of antibiotic resistance, increasing the risk of cancer, obesity, disruption of organs, and much more. Someone puts the results, of research into doubt, someone just shrugs, and someone quietly goes to organic food. Such studies were conducted on adults, with a strongly-formed body. How destructive will be the use of GMOs in the nutrition of children can only be imagined. As a result, in some European countries, the use of GMOs in the feeding of children is prohibited.
  4. GMOs harm a child during pregnancy. As a rule, the female body is more sensitive than the male’s; thus, the body of a pregnant woman is even more sensual. As a result, if something is “wrong,” the pregnant woman immediately feels it. The toxins, which are placed in GMO crops, become ‘heritage’ if the expectant mother consumes them. GMO products can go to the fetus inside the female’s womb, which has been scientifically proven. This action is based on the principle of a virus that conceals new dangers and yet has to be further explored.
  5. There is little information about GMO products. It has been proved that GMO components linger in the body and can penetrate different parts, integrating it. Freedman (2013) says that the effects of this incorporation are still underway to a full disclosure since they can appear only in the second and third generations. Moreover, if a person eats the same tomato (as an example) with the frost resistance gene from fish, then children of this person will not be frost resistant. Like a tomato, unfortunately, there is a high probability of many other unforeseen deviations in the GMO development. The lack of information about GMO products is the main threat and danger since nobody can guarantee the GMOs safety for human beings, but animals and the environment, in general, are in the trap.


No one can give an unambiguous assessment of whether genetically modified products are useful or not. They have their own mutually exclusive advantages and numerous disadvantages. Perhaps GMOs will become the only human salvation in several decades in the conditions of a continually growing world population and global warming. They certainly could help the starving regions of Africa, but their use is prohibited there. On the same breath, GMOs also serve adverse effects, regarding human health and overall consumption of the products with GMO. The main reasons should include the improvement of the unique qualities of the products themselves on a daily basis, as well as the economically sound interest of their producing countries. Taking all the mentioned disadvantages, one can further analyze and make own conclusion concerning this far from beneficial results goods.
