The Epidemic Of Poliomyelitis In USA & Poliomyelitis Prevention Essay

The epidemic from history that will be discussed in this paper is Poliomyelitis in the United States (1945-1955). The infectious disease that had led to epidemic is Poliomyelitis, or infantile paralysis, caused by the poliovirus. The symptoms of this disease include fever, diarrhea, headache, vomiting, stiffness of the neck and severe pains in the arms and legs. Weakness in muscles can result in an inability to move. In most cases, this disease causes no symptoms. The first polio vaccine was developed by Hilary Koprowski in 1950. The second vaccine was developed by Jonas Salk in 1952. However, Albert Sabin’s oral polio vaccine (OPV) developed in 1962 became the only vaccine used worldwide.

Assessing the socio-cultural environment and the economy of the United States during that event, it is necessary to place emphasis on the negative effects of the WWII. The economy of the country contributed to the development of scientific research, which led to the sudden end of the epidemic. The development and deployment of successful preventive vaccines would stand as a case study of difficult questions for the relationship among science, medicine, society and ethical standards” (Hays, 2010, p. 414).

Undoubtedly, public health changed in the United States due to that event. Considerable improvements in sanitations across the country contributed to public health. To prevent the disease, there were many initiatives aimed at eliminating germs and improving sanitation conditions. Public bathing places, such as pools, were properly controlled.

Finally, that care impacted current healthcare in the United States. Today the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) strongly recommends using inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) for routine vaccination of children across the United States. Thus fact means that all children should “receive four doses of IPV at ages 2, 4, and 6–18 months and 4-6 years” (Poliomyelitis Prevention in the United States, 2013).
