“The Great Gatsby” Essay

Francis Fitzgerald is a famous American writer. In fact, all the works of the author are written about the “era of jazz.” This term was written by the writer himself, it means a happy decade in the life of America between the end of the First World War and the beginning of the Great Depression when the younger generation rebelled against traditional culture (Fitzgerald). He wrote the legendary novel The Great Gatsby about jazz.

The last passage (from the following) is good in order to identify and analyze literary devices. A simile is a stylistic device based on a figurative comparison of two objects or states. It can be found in the following line of passage: «blew curtains in at one end and out the other like pale flags»; «making a shadow on it as wind does on the sea»; “their dresses were rippling and fluttering as if they had just been blown back in after a short flight around the house». There a lot of examples here. «Groan of a picture on the wall» and “The caught wind died out” are considered as a personification. Personification is likening inanimate objects or phenomena of nature to human qualities; the kind of metaphor that contributes to the poetic humanization. Alliteration is a stylistic method of repeating consonant sounds in artistic speech, enhancing its imagery and expressiveness. The short examples are «we walked», «high hallway», «breeze blew», «brown black». In the text, the phrase «The windows were ajar and gleaming white against the fresh grass outside» can be considered as alliteration and, simultaneously, imagery.  It is a stylistic feature of artistic speech associated with the use of words in the figurative meaning of metaphors, epithets, comparisons, hyperbole, etc.  «Two young women were buoyed up as though upon an anchored balloon» is a metaphor that transfers one object or phenomenon of reality to another on the basis of their similarity in any respect or in contrast.
