The Impact Of Texting On Relationships Essay

Texting in our society has affected face-to-face relationships.  In our American culture texting has become a part of daily life.  Keeping in touch with friends, family and significant others is much easier with texting then picking up the phone and talking.  The traditional way that relationships are made were to grow up together in school and in neighborhoods, or meeting at churches or birthday parties but now it’s easier to get on social media or dating sights. Texting has become a way to overcome a talking phobia.

Texting, social media, on-line dating have all become the way to communicate these days, long gone are the days of unpleasant phone conversations and long awkward silence.  These other forms of communication are rapidly taking over the way people communicate with each other.  One in three people send at least 100 text messages daily.  (how texting changes communication).  Texting is very convenient and gratifying, the process is fast and easier.   Using any method of communication except maybe face to face conversations and phone calls allow people to send fast and single sentence thoughts to one another.  Texting can be used at any time, during dinner, during meetings, school, or just about anywhere. Families rather text each other to catch up on the day or to meet one another, than to have conversations.   People can be discreet so that they are not interrupting someone else around them.  This is a huge addition to the way we communicate now.    Not only teenagers but grown adults communicate this way, it avoids person to person conversations which are usually slow paced anyway.

Using texting can make friendships easier, there are usually witty one-liner small talk going on basically at any time, whereas trying to get someone on the line may take forever.  Even ordering items on-line, you can chat instead of trying to get through to a live person.  Texting way not be the best source of proper use of grammar because many shortcuts are used.  Tone and style are out the window. Even though texting is not done in person, you can communicate all the time at any hour.  The internet has definitely taken away the nervousness feeling that some people may feel when they are talking to someone they just met.

Using Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, Facebook, or even Snapchat are ways to share memories, reconnect with friends, plan parties, and the best part of it all, to communicate instantly.  Out of 322 million people that live in the United States of America, about 64% of the population has a smartphone. (Negative impacts of Social Media on Face-to Face Interaction). Communication has improved a lot with these different technologies but at what costs.

Down side of texting is that people become impatient while texting, because it is so easy to communicate this way, they expect answers immediately.  Texting occurs during vacation or  in the middle of the night and it begins to blur public time versus private time in many relationships (how texting changes communication.) Older children and teenagers, even young adults really can’t write anything without adding in emoticons to the end of their sentences.  Texting during class or driving causes so many distractions and disruptions that it may lead to causing accidents or spreading rumors.  Teenagers and young adults are becoming more irresponsible because they are so enamored by their form of technology that they cannot put it down for a minute and get their work done.  The English language has taken a big hit with this sort of communication, words become shortened and it even changes the spoken language all together.  Writing the way, it used to be is gone out the door. People using the shortened versions of words may prove quicker when they are communicating via texting but when they are in person it does affect their speech.    When talking to someone in person you use your body and facial expressions to enhance your words, but because people have become emotion less.

Some people use these forms of media to catfish other folks.  Which is pretending to be someone that you are not to have romantic relationships.  This has also caused some people to be antisocial out in the public eye, because they only want to communicate through these other sorts of media.  Also, In a new relationship it is fun and exciting and fills you with anxiety when it comes to texting. Texting, Snap chat, Instagram, tweeting has all replaced the human voice in all matters.  These types of communications are abused and totally misinterpreted.  When dating this is a way to have short conversations and it is good for confirming stuff too.  This definatly a way to have quicker communication with people that are no way near your geographical area and in the real world you would not be able to even meet these people.

In the business world many employers are seeing a lack of professionalism (the negative impacts of social media on face to face interactions).  Because there are so many people that text at work about meetings or even clients, there are no manners and people have a polite behavior to one another in a work setting. Another problem is that those children that have grown up in a world that already has these different forms of technology are unable to remove themselves from social media and therefore have a really hard time getting along with other children within their social group (the negative impacts of social media on face to face interactions.)

To conclude this piece of writing the focal point in peoples live today should not be hanging on to every word they get off of Pinterest, Facebook or any other type of communication over the internet.   People are lazy when it comes to using words and they have no interest in meeting anyone in person these days.  Children cannot function without a device in front of their faces, long gone are the days of making up games and running around outside or interacting with others in social settings, everything is done over one type of social media technology.  Technology can be a powerful tool if it is used correctly and there needs to be rules about when they can use social media and when it is not okay, like while driving for one.
