The infant contributes to its own cognitive development. According to recent studies, the role of the infant in contributing to its own development is really significant. Infants can guide the behavior of their care givers, which in turn influences their own development. In addition, infants influence family relations. Moreover, infants have a strong impact on parents as individuals. As a result, infants’ role in these interactions is reflected in their cognitive development.

To start with, the infant can influence the behavior of the care givers in different ways. For example, recent study findings show that improved behavioral outcomes of infants can reduce anxiety and depression of primary caregivers (Spittle et al., 2010). Further, the infant influences its own cognitive development.

Additionally, infants can influence family relations, including parental relationships.  According to recent study, “father–child and mother–child attachments have a comparable impact on the infant’s cognitive development”(Brumariua & Kerns, 2010, p. 177). Researchers have found that the infant’s special attachment to parents, both the father and the mother, is reflected in stronger family bonds. In turn, parental relationships affect the infant’s cognitive development.

Finally, the infant may have a strong impact on parents as individuals. The infant affects the father and the mother as individuals, without their parental duties, responsibilities and roles. In turn, the relations between the adults (as male and female) are improved, leading to the improved mothering and fathering behavior patterns. According to researchers, “during the sensitive period of bond formation, infants’ brains are sensitized to the mutual influences between physiological influences, behavioral indicators and their interactions”(Feldman, 2012, p. 42). The improved mothering and fathering behaviors affect the infant’s cognitive development.

Thus, it is necessary to conclude that the infant can be viewed as a producer of his or her own cognitive development. It is very important to understand the role of the infant in the process of cognitive development, in which special attention should be paid to the context or environment in which the infant’s development takes place. In other words, the impact of the infant on family system may be fed back, influencing the infant’s cognitive development.
