The Leadership Strategy Essay

Today, the leadership strategy has a considerable impact on the organizational performance because leaders head people toward the achievement of organizational goals. Moreover, leaders can help organizations to conduct profound changes and restructuring leading them toward new horizons and opening new opportunities for the successful business development. In this regard, the leadership strategy is closely intertwined with the business strategy and organizations cannot underestimate the role of the leadership strategy in their overall business success, especially today, when many organizations operate in the culturally diverse environment and managers cannot always united employees to head them toward the achievement of organizational goals, unless they have well-develop leadership skills.

The leadership strategy is driven by business strategy. In this regard, the leadership strategy normally determines how many leaders the organization needs. At first glance, the number of leaders is irrelevant to the business development of organizations because organizations may need just a few leaders, who set the overall business strategy and the organizational development, while managers will do all the rest job. However, such a view on the leadership strategy is apparently superficial because contemporary organizations have multiple layers of the organizational hierarchy and there are key positions and layers which need a strong leadership. In such a situation, organizations have to determine clearly how many leaders they need and at what positions they need leaders.

The quality of leadership is also important for the leadership strategy. The quality of leaders involves demographic issues, such as age, ethnicity, race, gender, education, and experience. In addition, the quality of leaders may involve the use of different strategies of leaders’ promotion either through internal promotions or external hires. The diversity and targeted diversity are also determinant for the quality of leaders because in the contemporary business environment leaders should come prepared to work in the culturally diverse environment. In actuality, the quality of leaders is one of the main issues that organizations have to take into consideration, while developing their leadership strategy. At this point, it is worth mentioning the fact that it is not only organizations as a collective power that determine the leadership strategy but also and mainly leaders that hold top position in the organizational hierarchy, including top executives or owners of organizations. Their vision of the organizational development influences the leadership strategy chosen by organizations.

Furthermore, the leadership strategy determines skills and behaviors the organization expects from its leaders.  The set of skills and behaviors should match the business strategy and organizational culture. For instance, some organizations tend to authoritarian leadership and look for authoritarian leaders, while others tend to democratic interpersonal relations between leaders and their subordinates and such organizations naturally look for liberal, democratic leaders. Leaders should be aware of the fact that they serve as role models for their subordinates. Therefore, their skills and behaviors affect consistently the performance of the entire organization because their subordinates following their lead may develop the same negative behavioral patterns as leaders do. And on the contrary, if leaders provide positive behavioral patterns for their subordinates to follow, they can enhance consistently the organizational performance and boost the organizational development.

At the same time, the leadership strategy involves such issues as the collective capabilities that mean the capabilities of leaders to interact together as well as to interact with their subordinates. These capabilities determine, to a significant extent the overall effectiveness of their performance as leaders of their organizations. The collective capabilities of leaders are crucial for the development of the healthy organizational culture and make their subordinates confident in their leadership power. In addition, the collective capabilities help leaders at different levels coordinate their actions and policies within the organization elaborating the homogeneous leadership strategy and even leadership style.

Another integral element of the leadership strategy is the leadership culture which comprises key attributes of the culture created by leaders through the way in which they lead. The leadership style determines, to a significant extent, the leadership strategy and culture of the organization. For instance, the authoritarian leader is likely to oppress the competition that may challenge his/her position in the organization, whereas the liberal, democratic leader will encourage the partnership and friendly relations and competition within the organization.

At the moment, there are diverse leadership strategies, which are more or less effective depending on the organization and environment, where they are implemented in. At this point, it is possible to single out the leadership strategy based on the communication of the vision by the leader to his/her subordinates. In this respect, one of the most successful leaders, who used this strategy, was Steve Jobs, who had managed to communicate his vision to his subordinates and head them toward the fulfillment of his vision, when the vision eventually came true.

Another noteworthy leadership strategy is the strategy based on the leadership that encourages the development of talents. The leader using this strategy is always developing talents setting new goals in face of his/her subordinates and helping them to achieve those goals through the development of required skills and abilities. In such a way, subordinates of the leader keep progressing all the time, while the leader encourages such professional development of subordinates promoting the most successful and talented ones.

Furthermore, leaders can use the strategy based on the open manifestation of gratitude that means that leaders provide their subordinates with the positive feedback for their contribution to the organizational performance. In fact, this strategy is quite effective, especially if material motivation does not work and employees need the positive psychological response from the part of the leader. In such a way, subordinates feel they are necessary for the successful organizational development, whereas their contribution is noticeable and the leader recognizes their contribution to the organizational performance.

What has particularly changed my thinking of the contemporary leadership during the course is my increasing awareness of the globalization of business processes and leadership. In fact, today, it is hardly possible to speak about the specific national leadership style or strategy. Even though they are still important, their role in the future will decrease fast due to the process of globalization and emerging multicultural business environment.

Therefore, the future business and leadership strategy should be oriented on the work of leaders in the multicultural environment. In such a situation, leaders should develop new leadership strategies and styles that are effective in the multicultural environment. In fact, this means that they should shift toward universal, humanistic values, which should comprise the core of their leadership style and strategy.

In addition, leaders should come prepared to deal with new challenges and problems caused by inter-cultural conflicts in the workplace environment. They should respect cultural norms and values of their subordinates and, more important, they should make other employees to respect each other, regardless of cultural differences, ethnic or other differences.

At the same time, contemporary leaders should be more than just leaders. They should also be able to perform functions of managers. Therefore, they should have well-developed managerial skills along with leadership skills. The combination of the leadership and managerial skills is very important for the successful performance of leaders and enhancement of their position in the organization. In fact, leaders cannot succeed, if they cannot perform basic managerial functions because contemporary organizations grow too complicated to allow leaders to manage their organizations and lead them successfully without well-developed managerial skills.

Thus, today, the leadership strategy depends on multiple factors but, at the same time, the leadership strategy has a considerable impact on the overall organizational development. At this point, it is worth mentioning the fact that leaders determine, to a significant extent, the leadership strategy that prevails within the organization. However, the leadership strategy should match the specific organizational culture and environment. At the same time, today, leaders should come prepared to work in the multicultural environment. This is why in the future they should be able to overcome their national frontiers and boundaries and develop effective, universal leadership strategies and styles. In fact, leaders and leadership strategy will always remain important for the successful organizational development because leaders set the pace and strategic goals organizations have to achieve and, more important, it is leaders, who help organizations to reach those goals.
