The Problem of Osteoporosis | Discussion

Answer #1.

In today’s world, almost every third woman and every fifth man is faced with the problem of osteoporosis. Scientists are trying to change the situation in this issue and are developing modern methods of diagnosing osteoporosis. To date, this disease is one of the most common among older people. According to statistical data, it ranks fourth in terms of prevalence after a heart attack, oncology and diabetes. As studies show, women are more prone to this disease. In many cases, loss of bone mass occurs unnoticed; the disease initially does not manifest itself and is often diagnosed only after a severe fracture. According to Hodgson (2004), the urgency of the problem of osteoporosis is determined, first of all, by its consequences, which lead to a significant increase in disability and mortality among the elderly. Thus, since women have a lower peak bone mass compared to men, it becomes clear why osteoporosis is predominantly a “female” problem. Men experience a more gradual loss of bone mineral density after seventy or somewhat earlier, if there are additional risk factors for the development of osteoporosis.

Answer #2.

The significance of the disease in modern society and medicine is determined by its prevalence among the population, the severity of the course and outcomes, economic losses for the patient, family and society as a whole. The great interest in osteoporosis is currently caused primarily by the high prevalence among the population of both the disease itself and its consequences, such as fractures of the bones and the spine, which are the cause of temporary and persistent disability, limited ability to move, loss of self-service and, in general, deterioration in the quality of life, increased mortality, especially among the elderly. The economic costs of the patient, his family and society as a whole are enormous.

Fortunately, to date, the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of osteoporosis have become quite real. In the course of numerous recent studies on this disease, a huge amount of information has been obtained, indicating the importance of osteoporosis as a real threat to the health of the population. In addition to the basic recommendations for the healthy lifestyle (avoiding bad habits), moderate physical activity, adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D from food, modern medicine has the potential of drug prevention and therapy that can promote the recruitment of full-fledged peak bone mass and the prevention of such formidable complications of osteoporosis, like spinal and hip fractures, leading to disability in the vast majority of cases. Moreover, the National Osteoporosis Foundation in the United States has even issued a special guide for the treatment and prevention of this disease.
