The Strategic Importance of the Trans-Pacific Partnership Essay

We are currently living in the heavily globalized world. Among other things, it means that no country, despite its size and development level, is able to significantly prosper or even survive in the complete isolation from the rest of the world. That is why there are a lot of international treaties and organizations created by numerous states to achieve various political, economic, social, and other goals. So, the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) can be a good example of the above-mentioned and a quite important economic agreement for the United States. Thus, the main task of the given article is to explain its key issues for the American economy.

To begin, the main strategic importance of the TPP can be explained by the fact that the Asia-Pacific region is the most rapidly developing part of the world. That is why the influence on this region can be directly connected with potential benefits. To be more exact, the TPP member-countries such as Peru, Chile, New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, Vietnam, Japan, Canada, and Mexico represent about 40 percent of the global GDP (McBride, 2018). With this in mind, it becomes clear that the free trade among these nations opens extremely attractive and beneficial opportunities for all of them. The benefits above can be explained by the fact that the given agreement eliminates or significantly reduces the tariffs. This phenomenon covers a lot of economic spheres including automotive and manufactured products, textile, and agricultural commodities. Some experts state that this reduction is so essential that the TPP can be called a really free trade agreement.

Secondly, the TPP is strategically important because it pays a serious attention to digital commerce and its role in the modern world. Having set the comprehensive rules on e-commerce, the agreement makes everything possible to ensure the free flow of information across borders (McBride, 2018). In addition, the agreement bans any laws or requirements that can make foreign investors move servers to their host states. As a result, this step significantly increases the volume of digital commerce and its share in economies of the member countries.

Thirdly, the TPP pays an extremely great attention to labor and environmental standards. To tell the truth, there are not so many treaties that focus so heavily on the issues involved. To explain, the agreement stipulates that workplace conditions should be significantly improved, all the workers should be free to form unions, child and forced labor should be prohibited, and so on and so forth. In addition, all the enterprises, despite their size or kind of property, should do all their best in order to completely eliminate or significantly minimize the negative impact on the environment. This is a very positive phenomenon for the citizens of the TPP member countries.

Finally, the TPP can be considered as a perfect way for the USA to strengthen the position in the Asia-Pacific region and weaken the Chinese influence there simultaneously (Varas, 2016). Considering its geographical position, China understandably has a strong impact on the neighboring countries. Moreover, this influence is increased by the strong Chinese economy by itself. So, the given free-trade agreement can be one of the best variants for the United States of America to make a significant step towards conquering this beneficial market and shading the competitor’s role.

To conclude, the Trans-Pacific Partnership is said to be a strategically important agreement promising a lot of benefits for all its member countries. Reduced tariffs, controlled digital commerce, as well as improved labor and environmental conditions make the given agreement extremely beneficial both for the economies of the member-countries and for their citizens, which should be obligatory considered.
