The Suffrage Movement Essay

The suffrage movement emerged as the movement for the rights of women. More specifically, this movement aimed at the provision of American women with equal rights compared to men, especially with the voting right. Therefore, the primary goal of the suffrage movement was the elimination of gender inequality and provision of women with equal rights and liberties compared to men. Leaders of the suffrage movement were Carrie Chapman Catt, Anna Howard Shaw and Alice Paul, who established the National American Suffrage Association (NAWSA) with the National Woman’s Party (NWP), which split later from NASWA in 1916 under the lead of Alice Paul. The NWP was created because of emerging conflicts between NAWSA leaders concerning fundraising strategies for the movement. The disagreement of the leaders and their supporters on this issue resulted in the split between them and Alice Paul has founded the NWP.

The split between the NAWSA and NWP did not undermine their performance since eventually both organizations brought American women to success and equal voting and other rights. The NWP focused on civil protests, while the NAWSA attempted to maintain the nationwide social and political activities to consolidates women and to gain possibly larger political support for them. In fact, the NAWSA’s leaders did not support the NWP tactics that involved protests, like protest against Wilson or picketing outside the White House in Silent Sentinels action. Nevertheless, the NAWSA eventually backed up the NWP, especially, when members of the latter were detained by the police and later were force-fed, when they announced the hunger strike. The unified struggle of both organizations eventually brought them to the final victory as women had got the right to vote in the US and the Nineteenth Amendment was finally implemented. Hence, the passive, long-term strategy of the NAWSA turned out to be less effective compared to the aggressive, proactive strategy of the NWP.
