The Uniqueness of the Living Organisms of the Earth

Biodiversity

The uniqueness of earth’s living organisms is their variety and this is called biodiversity amongst scientists. As a result, it helps biologists provide drugs and chemicals to solve human problems, as well as, help understand the evolutionary species of these organisms and their role in healthy biological systems (Belk & Maier, 2013). This biodiversity allows species of organisms to be group into domains and kingdoms in order to recognize their functions and their purpose in the biosphere. For example, biodiversity of life helps differentiate bacteria allowing the production of specific antibiotics to counter the effects of bacteria-causing diseases.

The loss of biodiversity can lead to the extinction of a variety of animal species, as well as plant species, and as a result lead to the loss of energy flow in the ecosystem (Belk & Maier, 2013). There is a trophic food chain that allows the flow of energy within an ecosystem, this also allows free flow of nutrients along the food chain and all of these contribute to the basic necessities of health required by humans. Pollination, availability of nutrients to plants, prevention of flooding, erosion and other natural disasters are all the contributions of biodiversity to the biosphere. Furthermore, scientists believe that biodiversity sustains humans by satisfying a deep psychological need (Belk & Maier, 2013). Therefore, losing a few species or any species at all would create room for extinction which would, in turn, disrupt the ecosystem and make it susceptible to possible natural disasters.

Genetic variability is one of the most important forms of biodiversity, loss of this variability could lead to a problem called inbreeding depression- the inability to form heterozygous individuals leading to deleterious excessive genetic mutations expressed by low fitness of individuals (Belk & Maier,2013). Steps are being taken to preserve biodiversity as its importance in the lives of humans cannot be underestimated.
