The Watergate Scandal Essay

Looking at the Watergate Scandal, I believe CREEP, the Committee to Re-Elect the President, broke into Democratic headquarters at the Watergate Hotel under Nixon’s orders. I believe that Nixon could simply order a cover-up. In other words the key players in this case were the men who wanted to reelect the president through the disruption of Democrats. They decided to search for the vital information on the Democrats that could help the Republicans to succeed in the election process. These people were connected to President Richard Nixon’s reelection campaign because they were caught by the police while making an effort to wiretap phones and steal some secret documentation. My thoughts on the Watergate Scandal are based on the existing document and evidence.  I believe that the origins of the Watergate Scandal lay in the politics of the historical period. The United States was involved in the Vietnam War (1955-1975) and there were many opponents of this politics. President Nixon wanted to win the elections. This was the case the abuse of presidential power that led to the obstruction of justice (Kennedy & Cohen 894). Nixon should have been impeached and convicted. It becomes clear that he was forced to resign because he made his administration act as a criminal organization. I agree that under the US Constitution (Article I, Sections 2, 3, and Article II, Section 4), Nixon could have been convicted at the official impeachment trial for the serious crimes and misdemeanors.  However, the US Constitution allowed the court to avoid levying criminal charges against him. Ford found himself in an interesting position. He immediately pardoned Nixon for all his illegal actions. Nixon was not prosecuted, but the Watergate Scandal altered American politics, making Americans think more critically about their presidents. My thoughts on unelected presidents are the following:  Ford wasn’t Nixon’s Vice President, while Spiro Agnew resigned due to a separate scandal because of the charges of federal income tax evasion. Ford became the only man in the US history who managed to serve as president and vice president without being officially elected to these posts. Ford was made the US president solely by the US Congress voting.
