Tiger Woods Essay

The life of Tiger Woods is a wonderful example how a person could be extremely promising as a child, successful as an adult, and lose it all in the end. In spite of the fact that he has set numerous records and his achievements will most certainly be remembered, one can hardly help noticing that his success declined greatly. At the present moment, he lives in the shadow of the great accomplishments of the past without setting new records or winning major competitions. This paper will examine the life of Tiger Woods.

The future record-setting golf player was born in Cypress, CA, to Earl and Kultida Woods in 1975 (Sounes 24). He was their only child; however, Earl had several children from his first marriage. Speaking of Woods ancestry, it is worth mentioning that his father and his mother were of mixed race. If one gathers all the information about the family of this great professional golfer, one might see that he was equally Caucasian, African, Native American, and Asian. This also allowed him to enter different lists of minority players.

Being a prodigy child, Tiger expressed interest in gold at the age of two when his father started training him. As early as seven Tiger started winning the competition: every year he won a tournament for which he could qualify in terms of age. When he turned 11, he defeated his father for the first time and kept winning for the rest of his life. At the age of 15, he became the youngest US Junior Amateur champion. Ultimately, Tiger won a gold scholarship and enrolled at Stanford University, starting his amateur career.

The professional career of Tiger Wood began when he turned 21: at that point, he was approached by numerous companies, most notable of which was Nike (Harig par. 2). The Same year he won the Masters and became the younger winner of the tournament every. This was the beginning of this golden age: since August 1999 to September 2004 as well as from June 2005 to October 2010 he was ranked World Number One gold player which is one of the longest consecutive rankings in the golf history.

There is no wonder in that numerous companies tried to sign a contact with Woods. General Motors, General Mills, Titleist, American Express – all wanted to make him their endorser. However, the life of Wood is closely connected with Nike. One should keep in mind that when the latter signed a contract with him, the company was relatively unknown in the world of gold; however, the contract allowed the company to establish a dominant image in the industry due to victories of Woods. Moreover, the amount of money paid to him is estimated to be the biggest up to date for a professional athlete (DiCarlo par. 3).

For numerous years, Tiger Wood was synonymous with winning and there literally was no mo competition in the world of gold. Brown, as well as other scholars, pointed out that the achievements of Wood actually had a negative impact on golf since if he was present in the tournament, the players played worse since they were confident in their failure and did not want to risk their health (988). Moreover, some courses tried to perform what has become known as “Tiger proofing”: they marked tried to help other players make long distance shots.

Speaking of playing style of Tiger Woods, it is impossible to put emphasis on a single approach that he mastered. Obviously, he is known for wonderful long-distance shots which allowed him to achieve advantage early in the game. However, as Woods himself mentioned, he tried to master every skill needed for victory. That is why he turned out to be a truly universal player who literally did not have any weaknesses.

Having accumulated tremendous wealth, Woods set up different ventures. Tiger Woods Foundation may be the most famous: it promoted golf among underprivileged children. Other than that, it also provided education and scholarships to those who wanted to go to college. There are several facilities across the country. Contrary to that Tiger Woods Design may be seen as a failed venture: out of three golf courses that it was to design, only one was accomplished. In addition to that, Woods wrote a book about his golfing experience which became extremely popular among athletes.

Nevertheless, for the majority of the people, Tiger Woods is mostly known because of infidelity scandals. There have been numerous allegations as well as pieces of evidence presented to the public that he has been involved in various extramarital affairs (“Hear Tiger Panic to Mistress”). As a result of that, his marriage dissolved and many sponsors called off their endorsement, fearing that this would damage their image. Gradually, the performance of Woods was deteriorating, first placing him at the bottom of Top 100 golfers and then out of Top 500.

As one can easily see, the life of Tiger Woods is full of ups and down. When being a child, he had to wait to qualify for a new tournament that he won. He started his professional career and set numerous records. Woods signed one of the biggest contracts with athletes in history when he became the endorser of Nike. His accomplishments changed the world of golf forever. Nevertheless, he could not recover after his infidelity scandal and ultimately lost his first place, leaving Top 100 and Top 500 in the future years.
