Types of Reading Programs Essay

Every educator will agree on the statement that reading is one of the most critical steps in each child’s development in the academic environment. Slavin et al. (2009) have conducted a paper, in which closely evaluate each of the four chosen reading programs to understand, which of them is the most effective one. For the research, four types of reading programs have been taken – “Reading curricula, instructional technology, instructional process programs, and combinations of curricula and instructional process” (Slavin et al., 2).

The first type of reading program, the reading curricula is a form of program, which encompasses two in itself – basal and supplemental programs. However, according to the description and the author’s explanation, this reading comes more in the form of a basal program. The second reading program, instructional technology, is explained as a mainly supplemental reading program, however, also including mixed-method models and embedded multimedia. Third reading programs of choice include not only the materials for teaching children, yet focuses on teaching teachers first. “Instructional process programs are methods that focus on providing teachers with extensive professional development to implement specific instructional methods” (Slavin et al., 31). The last, however, not the least type of the reading program that was explored in contrast to the previous three, a combination of curricula and instructional process, gives both teachers and children the needed knowledge for understanding the reading process.

To achieve the needed results, scholars reviewed 63 studies in order to understand the effectiveness of the programs. Results have shown that the majority of the successful reading programs focus on giving teachers “extensive professional development and followup focused on specific teaching methods” (Salvin et al., 71), making children working in groups, and focusing on phonics. Generally, the study helps better understand “what matters for student achievement are approaches that fundamentally change what teachers and students do every day” (Salvin et al., 73).
