Please describe how you have prepared for your intended major, including your readiness to success in your upper-division courses once you enroll at the university.

Having multicultural background and traveling a lot in the past 5 years, I have developed a strong interest in making cities better for people. Rationalized and innovative construction can be considered the basis for the urbanization and prosperity of countries, and in this regard, I am intended to become a specialist who creates efficient environments in which people could live and work comfortably.

Thus, my pursuit of a career in Civil Engineering has started long before my college application. During my school years, I paid increased attention to physics, chemistry, and advanced mathematics, as well as took additional classes to start developing professional skills in programs like AutoCAD, MathCad and Excel. The general course in my school did not involve scientific projects on engineering-associated specialties, but I still used every opportunity to entwine my interests into both inside and outside classroom activities. For instance, one of my team projects in economy was focused on designing a real-life street in Cairo, which included the assessments on the possible location of sidewalks, traffic signs, and pavement, as well as the cost of all the required improvements.

Furthermore, I took a summer volunteer work as a junior assistant at a construction firm in Egypt, specializing in bridge engineering. As a junior assistant, I had a chance to witness all phases of a construction project, from the design of a bridge to its construction and operation, as well as was responsible supervising the construction site directly. In particular, my job as an on-site volunteer involved monitoring of compliance with the schedule, building codes and rules. In the teamwork with interns and supervisors of the project, I also participated in the procedures of controlling the quality of building materials and structures received from the suppliers. Therefore, in my further professional development, in particular, during my upper-division courses, I plan to focus on conducting more team projects for real clients, in order to strengthen my knowledge in the fields of applied engineering, computer science, and IT. Believing that many construction projects need to be further modernized through energy reconstruction, I would also direct my effort at studying sustainable structural components, new building materials, innovative energy systems, as well as developing new processes.

Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes, or contributed to group efforts over time.

One of the most fundamental leadership experiences I had consisted in taking the position of the Head of the Educational Center in the structure of our school’s Student Self-Government. Being elected as the Head after two years of successful work in several self-government subdivisions, I was thus promoted to vaster responsibilities, including the organization of advisory groups to help low-performing students, monitoring of attendance and performance in a class, supervision of students’ participation in school competitions, thematic evenings and subject weeks, organization of meetings with interesting people, as well as other educational activities of students’ interest.

Leading the team of 7 people in this relatively new structure, I initially faced such common barriers as the vagueness of goals, impatience and anticipation of instant changes. Under this conditions, my first tasks as a leader involved the articulation of clear vision, goals and plans, and making them understandable for all the teammates. Next, I started to work on analyzing my approaches to each member, to their individual abilities, strengths and potentials in order to develop the appropriate role distribution, and then individually motivate team members to perform their duties and functions. In coordinating teamwork, I was making emphasis on our common vision of the Center’s future perspectives.

In particular, I aimed at expanding its role to a full-fledged body of a student research project committee, functioning on the equal terms with the regular tutor committee. Here, one of the key mission consisted in transforming my team members approach to work so that they would strive for the more outstanding results. This goal was reaches by ensuring organizational flexibility, high level of involvement and personal motivation. As a result, the student committee was formed to become the initial stage for assessing and directing students’ efforts in developing both individual and team research projects.

Overall, participation in student self-government was an excellent opportunity for me to challenge my planning and organizational skills, solving multi-level tasks, demonstrating the uniqueness of my personality, and accumulating experience in communication and leadership.

Every person has a creative side, and it can be expressed in many ways: problem solving, original and innovative thinking, and artistically, to name a few. Describe how you express your creative side.

Realizing the importance of developing creativity, I started to motivate myself for it early in childhood. My first creative hobby was modelling of airplanes, helicopters, ships, cars and other vehicles made of different materials. First constructed from paper components, my models soon turned into wooded and then metal objects that could function similarly to real ones, but had original appearance. Later I also developed interest to 3D modeling in simplest programs offered freely in creative classes for adolescents. Such classes covered the creation of stereometry figures, grouping 3D objects, managing drawing tools, modifications, and texturing. Since that time, I regularly practice in developing my spatial imagination, and now have an idea of combining the created objects into a vast model of a modern city.

In addition to direct creative expressed through manual operation, I also believe I possess creativity in solving mental tasks. In particular, my experience as a leader of the Educational Center and multiple research project leader shows that one of my strong sides is the flexibility of thinking, i.e. the ability to find absolutely new solutions under new conditions, effectively use the available sources, as well as quickly change my thinking and behavior, depending on the current situation. Such flexibility of thinking helped me multiple time in predicting probable outcomes of crisis settings and finding a way out while eliminating intrapersonal conflicts. For instance, when one of the thematic conferences had to be rescheduled due to the sudden unavailability of the venue, while many of the participants could not change the arrival date, we decided to move the conference outside the building, by organizing open-air discussions and a small but efficient roofed stage for speakers.

Overall, creativity is the crucial part of an engineering career, and is required on all the stages of project production. Being closely linked to the desire to transform the surrounding reality, Non-standard approach to solving construction and engineering tasks and resourcefulness in professional matters not only guarantee the professional success, but also secure the quality of project realization.

What would you say is your greatest talent or skill? How have you developed and demonstrated that talent over time.

The skill that has current served my educational success the most is the ability to learn foreign languages quickly. Coming from the Arab-speaking family that moved to CA, I started to learn English when I was 6, and when I moved back to Egypt for high school, I also started to master my understanding of Saidi Arabic and French due to the multicultural class composition. Despite the fact that I do not believe in totally genetic nature of strong language learning skills, I share the opinion that only 5% of the planet’s population has the capacity for language as a sign system, while others rather have the ability for voice communication, that is, synthetic abilities, abilities to formulate thoughts using linguistic means. In the first case I attribute myself to, an important role is played by analytic functions of mind, i.e. by understanding of the structure of a foreign language, as well as phonemic hearing and natural feeling of a language which I demonstrated in early age. As a child who intensely learned foreign languages, I was always characterized as much more focused, attentive, diligent and quick-thinking than many of my peers who were not into studying foreign languages.

In general, I have always put emphasis on studying languages because it is one of the most important components of a modern, successful professional. Knowledge of at least one foreign language broadens the mind, allows you to learn the culture and customs of other nations, and makes international cooperation possible. Learning languages has also significantly contributed to the development of my communication skills and has helped to eliminate many psychological barriers. Furthermore, as practice shows, those specialists who in addition to knowledge of their primary profession are proficient in one or several foreign languages are in the most favorable situation on the labor market. Indeed, to keep abreast of the latest developments from the world of science and technology, one must be able to read articles in the language of the source. In addition, it is much easier to work with foreign partners if you possess the information first hand. I believe that my existing and future language skill will be an important factor of my career growth and help me gain jobs around the world.

Describe how you have taken advantage of a significant educational opportunity or worked to overcome an educational barrier you have faced.

The greatest educational opportunity I gained since my family moved to the USA was the opportunity to move back to Egypt for high school in order to learn about the culture and language of my origin. Being a hard and unobvious decision in general, it, however, has brought a number of benefits, including:

1. Removing boundaries and psychological blocks, acquiring knowledge about other cultures. Not immediately, of course, but being in a multinational environment or changing cultural environment, a student is gradually becoming a globally minded person, absorbs the culture, languages, and traditions of a nation in a relaxed natural environment. Going back to my home country after living in the US for many years has not only helped me to develop tolerance and communication skills but also has enhanced my ability to better understand people;

2. Improving language skills. By restoring and improving my level of Egyptian Arabic, I have widened my personal cultural scope; 

3. Studying in a different way. Those who study abroad typically discover a whole new way of learning. First, it was a bit confusing after the previously practiced US model, and, nevertheless, this experience has allowed me to reveal new ways of self-education.

4. Learning more about oneself. Caught in a completely new environment of life, I was able to figure out which abilities I have, and which I do not.

5. Gaining an advantage in a CV. The experience of exploring a new country and getting the necessary practical experience in another culture is a significant competitive advantage that is expected to guarantee a decent job after graduation.

6. Getting quality adaptation to independent life. Moving abroad is a test of the independence that teaches to make one’s own decisions and, most importantly, take responsibility for them. This applies to both everyday situations and more serious issues, such as the choice of a future profession.

Naturally, there were also certain challenges and barriers I faced. A period of school adaptation and remoteness from home are just a few of them. For me, the biggest problem was and still is the lack of physical contact, inability to see and help my parents at any time. While abroad, I also faced financial problems, difficulties with logistics, but over time, certainly, each student grows up and becomes responsible for one’s actions. Although living away from home is not easy, it is a great opportunity to grow up and learn to deal with problems on your own. This has taught me be spontaneous and not to be afraid of adventures and taking chances, helped to look at my own culture and the American culture with different eyes, and made me a person who can count on oneself.

Describe the most significant challenge you faced and the steps you have taken to overcome the challenge. How has this challenge affected your academic achievement?

When making a decision on completely moving to another country, I was most afraid to get into an environment, where strangers and newcomers were not too well received. The change of the social surrounding entailed stress. Once in the new, already established team with its own developed structure, where roles are distributed, competence areas are divided, with its leaders and outsiders, a student is forced to build new relationships with classmates to find one’s place. The same applies to teachers: the change of teachers put me in a position of an exam, when I first did not know the requirements but had to meet those standards anyway. The situation of a novelty is always alarming in varying degrees. In my case, the condition was accompanied by a strong two-week internal tension, making it difficult for me to make rational decisions, followed by a decline in performance, quick fatigue and irritability.

To combat my initial stress, in the first two weeks I tried to get a maximum of information about the new school, and then tried to learn more about the students, teachers, and general atmosphere, was not missing any opportunity to visit various meetings add discussions. Having registered on school website and social media community, I tried to make more friend online, receive more information about the personalities of my classmates and teachers. In general, my strategy involved looking at the stress situation from the other side. Indeed, the transition to a new school makes it possible to start a new life from scratch, erase all the old shortcomings. In addition, this is a unique and important training before a series of other new places of study and work in future.

Thus, undoubtedly, the transition to a new school and the following process of socio-psychological and cultural adaptation is a serious test at any age, but in the end, it allows rising to the next level of personal development. By passing this difficult life stage, I have gained the vital experience in solving problems constructively and forming new patterns of behavior, have developed new qualities, broadened my thinking, strengthened the will and improved communication skills. All this leads to the advance in the adaptive capacity that will positively influence my further adaptation in the profession, settling down in a team, and getting accustomed to the peculiarities and conditions of the professional life.

What have you done to make your school or your community a better place?

Since traditional education does not always meet modern requirements, there was an objective need in my high school in Egypt for additional methods that are closer to the real professional activities that would help to shape professional thinking in students. As a Head of the Educational Center in the structure of Student Self-Government Office, I believed that an important role in the development of research skills belongs to the student science club, which would be some form of a public organization contributing to the improvement of the quality of education, accumulation of experience, creative development, optimization of the scientific potential, and assistance in research planning. The functioning of a future science club started from the organization of my first student research project committee, an independent body whose main objectives were to develop the motivation to research work, cultivate a creative attitude to research activities, heighten interest in fundamental researches, improve the quality of research project design, and provide initial assessment and direction of projects.

One of the important features of the committee was that it united students who already made their career choice consciously. Interest in the future profession and the desire of students to improve the level of knowledge dictated the choice of forms of the research work. Thus, the Educational Center soon started to offer the opportunities of participation in competitions of student scientific works, presentation of research findings in the form of public reports and printed articles, participation in scientific conferences and exhibitions outside the school, as well as practical activities. Such a variety of forms of work and the possibility to choose allowed maintaining students’ steady interest to the scientific work. In addition, involving students of different classes enabled introducing the continuity in the work, creating an atmosphere of fellowship and mutual support. The scientific club that has been formed by activists on the basis of the committee has now become a friendly community, a single cohesive team with a common goal.

In sum, it is possible to acknowledge my positive experience of organizing new forms of scientific networks inside my school. The introduction of a student research project committee and a scientific club has a beneficial effect on the professional thinking of students, increases the creative component of their work, as well as raises students’ certification level.

Beyond what has already been shared in your application, what do you believe makes you stand out as a strong candidate for admissions to the University of California.

In addition to the multicultural experience of education, language, leadership, and creativity skills, I believe that my clear understanding of my designation is a pledge of my personal effectiveness, and it makes me a worthy candidate for the admission to the University of California.

Having decided on my career preferences early, I have directed many efforts to form appropriate knowledge and competencies. Some of them include communication skills, global thinking, responsible approach to the performance of duties, the ability to organize the working process, the ability to independently gain the necessary information, to isolate problems and find ways of their rational solutions, the ability to persuade, speak in public, find the right approach to people, the ability to resolve conflict, stress resistance, timeliness, a developed spatial thinking and the ability to work in basic programs for future engineers. Thus, having the formulated perception of my future profession, I develop ingenuity to come up with a form that would be interesting, new and attractive to people, learn to feel design beyond calculations, work on my understanding of objects and their surroundings, history, politics, learn to grasp the breath of contemporary culture.

Besides, I also have a clear vision of my future career developments and perspectives. My career plan includes the opportunities of practice in different countries and fields, acquisition of competencies in the field of green building and energy-saving technologies, the development of innovative materials and methods of work with them, as well as the opportunity to lead the project organization. In this regards, the key success factor will be the availability of expertise in a narrow range, for example, at the moment, a great importance is given to the creation of environmental projects, as well as buildings that meet the requirements of people with disabilities. The architects of the future also have yet to solve the problem of constructing modern housing taking into account the factor of the world’s population growth. There are many other areas waiting for the search of modern solutions, and that is exactly what I see as the goal of my life.
