The water quality standards are the main basis of the water quality, which help protect clean water for human consumption and improve the quality of dirty and poisonous water. As a matter of fact, they are “developed to help protect and maintain water quality necessary to meet and maintain designated or assigned uses, such as swimming, recreation, public water supply, and/or aquatic life” (“Water Quality Standards,” n.d., para. 1). In fact, water should be safe for human consumption and should not possess some unpleasant tastes, appearance and odors. It should not pose a public health threat, and thus, should be well aerated, clear and colorless.
Under the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) that guarantees the quality of Americans’ drinking water, the Environmental Protection Agency provides the legal amounts with the levels on the different contaminants in drinking water. Water quality criteria pollutants are a mix of all the things, which can negatively affect the quality of Americans’ drinking water that can be considered to be a pollutant.
In return, the contaminant levels of water can be divided into the following two standards: maximum contaminant level and maximum contaminant level goal. MCL is considered to be the maximum concentration of a chemical, which is permitted in the public drinking water systems. The primary drinking water standards monitor and maintain radioactive elements, organic and inorganic chemicals, which can have a negative impact on the safety of drinking water. The secondary drinking water standards monitor and maintain total dissolved solids, odor, pH, chloride, zinc, and sulfates that can have a negative impact on the safety of drinking water.
Taking the above-stated information into account, it is necessary to draw a conclusion that water quality standards are very important elements that are based on the water quality, which help protect clean water and make the quality of dirty and poisonous water better.
